Saturay was a great day! I went to the orphanage with Sister Lyerly. The LDS Chapel is just a few months old and it is within 10 minutes walking distance from our apartment. The Lyerly’s picked us up and we went to the church with them. Sister Lyerly introduced me to several of the women in the 1st branch. Almost all of them are sisters who are Tia, Kristina and Rebecca’s age. It was like being with my daughters. They were so cute and fun to be around. We spent sometime visiting with these sisters and each of them had a bag of things they collected to take to the ORPHANAGE. We rented a Taxi (real vehicle) and about 8 of us went to the orphanage.
The Orphanage was started 9 years ago by a young girl named Shanti. Again she is about Tia and Kristina’s age. She told us this was her dream that has come true. It is an orphanage for children with disabilities. Parents of children with disabilities don’t know how to handle these children and often abandon them to the streets. So they have taken these children in and Shanti has 32 full time children. There are another 40 that come part time. She works with there parents to teach them how to care for these children and how to teach them. There were probably 8 teachers, plus Shanti, her mom who does all the cooking for the children, and the secretary. We toured the orphanage and visited the children. The church has donated money for furniture (tables and chairs) and workers were there working on building the chairs. I need to mention here that the Lyerly’s are humanitarian missionaries. The church supports Non Government Organizations all over the world. Needless to say, we were treated like royalty. There was a great honoring that happened after we toured the orphanage. We sat at the head of the table and they praised us for what we had done. (I had done nothing) Then they wanted a speech from Sister Lyerly and myself. I told them they were to be honored not us! That the Lord would be pleased with the service that their many hands had rendered. They were doing a great service to care for these children and we were honored to know them! The orphanage was one of those experiences I shall never forget! The girls from the ward that were with us were in the Relief Society presidency and they are anxious to do more for the Orphanage.
